White Plains KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in White Plains KY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

White Plains KY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up through White Plains KY clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Kentucky or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in White Plains KYAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local White Plains KY hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your White Plains home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less costly than traditional options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with any sonographer college you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask White Plains KY ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the White Plains KY area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous White Plains KY employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are interested in have partnerships with White Plains KY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the White Plains health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within driving distance of their White Plains KY home. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the White Plains KY area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
