Wendover KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Wendover KY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work functions of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable

  • Assessing results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Wendover KY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Wendover KY clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Kentucky or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Programs

student attending online sonography class in Wendover KYAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Wendover KY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Wendover home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Wendover KY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Wendover KY area. Of course location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Wendover KY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Wendover KY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Wendover health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Wendover KY home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Wendover KY area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

    Mary Carson Breckinridge

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, into a prominent family, Breckinridge was a daughter of Arkansas Congressman, US Minister to Russia Clifton Rodes Breckinridge and a granddaughter of Vice President John C. Breckinridge. She was educated by private tutors in Washington, D.C., Switzerland and in St. Petersburg, Russia. She obtained a degree from St Lukes Hospital New York in Nursing in 1910 and advanced Midwife Training at a Hospital in London, England.

Breckinridge's mother disapproved of her cousin Sophonisba Breckinridge's going to college and starting a career. She helped to ensure that her daughter followed a more traditional path. Breckinridge was married in 1904 to a lawyer, Henry Ruffner Morrison, of Hot Springs, Arkansas. He died only two years later; the couple had no children.

In 1912 she married Richard Ryan Thompson, a Kentucky native who was serving as the president of Crescent College and Conservatory in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. The couple had two children. Their daughter Polly was born prematurely in 1916 and did not survive. Two years later, their beloved four-year-old son, Clifford Breckinridge ("Breckie") Thompson, died of appendicitis. Breckinridge's husband was unfaithful; they were divorced in 1920 and Breckinridge resumed the use of her maiden name
