Thornton KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Thornton KY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work functions of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort

  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Thornton KY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Thornton KY clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Kentucky or whatever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Thornton KYAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Thornton KY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Thornton home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech program you are looking at, confirm that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Thornton KY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Thornton KY area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Thornton KY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have relationships with Thornton KY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Thornton healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Thornton KY residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Thornton KY area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
