Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Taylorsville KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Taylorsville KY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job duties of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Taylorsville KY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges organize through Taylorsville KY clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Kentucky or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Sonographer Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Taylorsville KYAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Taylorsville KY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Taylorsville home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are considering, check that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Taylorsville KY ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Taylorsville KY area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Taylorsville KY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have associations with Taylorsville KY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Taylorsville medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Taylorsville KY home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Taylorsville KY area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
