Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Stamping Ground KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Stamping Ground KY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Stamping Ground KY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Stamping Ground KY clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Kentucky or whatever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Stamping Ground KYAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Stamping Ground KY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Stamping Ground home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are considering, confirm that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Stamping Ground KY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Stamping Ground KY area. Naturally location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Stamping Ground KY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are reviewing have relationships with Stamping Ground KY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Stamping Ground medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Stamping Ground KY residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Stamping Ground KY area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
