Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Sandgap KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Sandgap KY hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Sandgap KY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools organize with Sandgap KY hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Kentucky or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Sandgap KYAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Sandgap KY hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Sandgap home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonography college you are looking at, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Sandgap KY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Sandgap KY area. Clearly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Sandgap KY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are interested in have associations with Sandgap KY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Sandgap health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Sandgap KY residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Sandgap KY area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
