Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Rockfield KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Rockfield KY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job tasks of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Rockfield KY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Rockfield KY hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Kentucky or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Rockfield KYAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Rockfield KY outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Rockfield home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less expensive than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with any sonographer program you are looking at, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Rockfield KY area. Clearly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Rockfield KY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Rockfield KY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Rockfield health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Rockfield KY residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Rockfield KY area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
