Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Regina KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Regina KY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Regina KY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Regina KY hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Kentucky or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Regina KYAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Regina KY outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Regina home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are often more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, check that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Regina KY ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Regina KY area. Certainly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Regina KY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have relationships with Regina KY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Regina medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Regina KY home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Regina KY area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
