Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Reed KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Reed KY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job tasks of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Reed KY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools organize with Reed KY hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Kentucky or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Reed KYAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Reed KY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Reed home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are often more affordable than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are reviewing, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Reed KY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Reed KY area. Obviously location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Reed KY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have partnerships with Reed KY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates establish professional connections in the Reed health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Reed KY home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Reed KY area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

It stars Ky-Mani Marley, Spragga Benz, Paul Campbell, Wyclef Jean and Louie Rankin. It was written and directed by Cess Silvera. Despite its low budget, the distribution of an unfinished bootleg made it a cult favourite long before its official limited release in the United States by Triumph Films and Destination Films in 2006.

They extort, beat, and murder their way to the top of the Miami underworld before their dream ends in a brazen shoot out, during which Teddy's thugs kill Wayne and shoot Max. Biggs almost gets shot as he comforts Wayne at his deathbed, but Max shoots the assailant before it happens.
