Sonographer Work Summary

Preston KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Preston KY hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Preston KY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools set up through Preston KY clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Kentucky or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Preston KYAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Preston KY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Preston home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonography school you are looking at, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Preston KY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Preston KY area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Preston KY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are evaluating have relationships with Preston KY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Preston health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Preston KY home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Preston KY area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Kentucky Route 61

Kentucky Route 61 (KY 61) is a 151.333-mile (243.547 km) long Kentucky State Highway extending north from the Tennessee state line in Cumberland County to Columbia in Adair County through to Greensburg in Green County. From there, the route traverses LaRue, Hardin and Bullitt counties to terminate in Jefferson County (where it is commonly signed as Preston Street or Preston Highway) at the junction of U.S. Route 31E (East Main Street) in downtown Louisville.

The first 12.8 miles (20.6 km) of KY 61 is considered part of the Appalachian Development Highway System’s Corridor J project. That stretch of highway is one of five segments of that ADHS project, along with KY 90, US 27, KY 914, and KY 80 going from Burkesville through Burnside to London.[2]

KY 61 runs concurrently with KY 90 into downtown Burkesville. KY 90 branches westward, while KY 61 goes onto a northwestward course, and turns northeast near the tripoint of the Cumberland, Metcalfe, and Adair County lines. Going north, the route crosses the Adair County line twice, and enters the far eastern tip of Metcalfe County before entering Adair County the second time.[3] KY 61 has junctions with the Louie B. Nunn Cumberland Parkway and KY 80 on the west side of Columbia. KY 55 (Columbia Bypass) also has a concurrency with KY 61 near Columbia as well.[4]
