Pewee Valley KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Pewee Valley KY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work duties of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Pewee Valley KY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Pewee Valley KY hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Kentucky or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Pewee Valley KYAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Pewee Valley KY outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Pewee Valley home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently more affordable than on campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But just as with any sonographer college you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Pewee Valley KY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Pewee Valley KY area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Pewee Valley KY employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Pewee Valley KY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Pewee Valley medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Pewee Valley KY home. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Pewee Valley KY area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

The site of present-day Pewee Valley was first settled as a stop on the Louisville and Frankfort Railroad in 1852 under the name Smith's Station, although it remains unclear which Smith gave his name to the community. It may have been Henry S. Smith, the son of a local pioneer, or Thomas Smith, a local shopkeep. The name was changed to Pewee Valley on the establishment of a post office by Henry's son Charles Franklin Smith in 1856. The name refers to the eastern wood pewee, a local bird, but, as the town lies on a ridge, the reason for naming the settlement a "valley" remains obscure.[1]

There were 502 housing units at an average density of 266.3 per square mile (103.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.10% White, 2.37% African American, 0.28% Asian, 0.56% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races.
