Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Pembroke KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Pembroke KY hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Pembroke KY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges organize with Pembroke KY hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Kentucky or whatever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Pembroke KYAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Pembroke KY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Pembroke home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less expensive than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just as with every sonography program you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Pembroke KY ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Pembroke KY area. Naturally location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are other things that you must also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Pembroke KY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are interested in have associations with Pembroke KY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Pembroke health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Pembroke KY home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Pembroke KY area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
