Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Paducah KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Paducah KY hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Paducah KY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Paducah KY hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Kentucky or whichever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Paducah KYAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Paducah KY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Paducah home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are considering, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Paducah KY ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Paducah KY area. Clearly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Paducah KY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are evaluating have associations with Paducah KY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students establish professional connections in the Paducah healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Paducah KY home. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Paducah KY area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Paducah, Kentucky

Paducah (/pəˈduːkə/) is a home rule-class city in and the county seat of McCracken County, Kentucky, United States.[5] The largest city in the Jackson Purchase region, it is located at the confluence of the Tennessee and the Ohio rivers, halfway between St. Louis, Missouri, to the northwest and Nashville, Tennessee, to the southeast. The population was 24,941 in 2017,[6] down slightly from 25,024 during the 2010 U.S. Census.[7] Twenty blocks of the city's downtown have been designated as a historic district and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The town was laid out by explorer William Clark in 1827 and renamed Paducah. Although local lore long connected this to an eponymous Chickasaw chief "Paduke" and his tribe of "Paducahs", authorities on the Chickasaw have since said that there was never any chief or tribe of that name, or anything like it, nor any words like them in the Chickasaw language. Instead, it is thought that Clark named the town for the Comanche people,[3], who were known by the settlers as the Padoucas, from a Spanish transliteration of the Kaw Pádoka.[8] or Omaha Pádoⁿka.)[9]

Paducah was formally established as a town in 1830 and incorporated as a city by the state legislature in 1838.[2] By this time, steam boats traversed the river system, and its port facilities were important to trade and transportation. In addition, developing railroads began to enter the region. A factory for making red bricks, and a foundry for making rail and locomotive components became the nucleus of a thriving "River and Rail" economy.
