Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Owenton KY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Owenton KY hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Kentucky or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Owenton KYAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Owenton KY outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Owenton home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are often more affordable than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech program you are looking at, check that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Owenton KY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Owenton KY area. Naturally location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Owenton KY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are interested in have associations with Owenton KY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Owenton health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Owenton KY residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Owenton KY area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
