Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Millersburg KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Millersburg KY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Millersburg KY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up with Millersburg KY clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Kentucky or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Millersburg KYAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Millersburg KY outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Millersburg home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less expensive than on campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonography college you are considering, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Millersburg KY ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Millersburg KY area. Obviously location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Millersburg KY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are reviewing have associations with Millersburg KY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Millersburg health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Millersburg KY home. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Millersburg KY area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
