Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Hebron KY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are assessing have partnerships with Hebron KY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Hebron medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Hebron KY home. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Hebron KY area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
