Sonographer Job Description

Hanson KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Hanson KY hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Hanson KY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools organize with Hanson KY clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Kentucky or whatever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Hanson KYAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Hanson KY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Hanson home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonography school you are considering, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Hanson KY ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Hanson KY area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Hanson KY employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are interested in have relationships with Hanson KY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Hanson medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Hanson KY home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Hanson KY area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
