One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Elizabethtown KY area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Elizabethtown KY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are interested in have relationships with Elizabethtown KY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Elizabethtown healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Elizabethtown KY home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Elizabethtown KY area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
