Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Ekron KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Ekron KY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Ekron KY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools organize through Ekron KY clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Kentucky or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Ekron KYAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Ekron KY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Ekron home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are looking at, check that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Ekron KY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Ekron KY area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Ekron KY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are assessing have relationships with Ekron KY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Ekron healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Ekron KY home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Ekron KY area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
