Sonographer Occupation Summary

Dunnville KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Dunnville KY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work functions of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Dunnville KY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Dunnville KY clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Kentucky or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Dunnville KYAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Dunnville KY hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Dunnville home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonography program you are reviewing, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Dunnville KY ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Dunnville KY area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Dunnville KY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have associations with Dunnville KY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Dunnville medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Dunnville KY residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Dunnville KY area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

Nunn Cumberland Parkway before intersecting KY 80. It runs concurrently with KY 80 for about 0.54 miles (0.87 km), KY 76 goes on to meet U.S. Route 127, and it runs concurrently with that route in a southerly path for 0.985 miles (1.585 km) before turning right.
