So it’s very important that you investigate each college so that you can evaluate and compare your options. But exactly where does one begin? Many prospective students will start by looking for schools that are within driving distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Naturally cost and location must be considered when making a decision, but there are other critical factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they provide internships. These and additional qualifiers will be discussed more in depth later in this post. But first, let’s go over what a sonogram tech does and the degrees and online education options that are offered.

Sonogram Tech Job Description

Dayton KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Dayton KY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Dayton KY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Dayton KY hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Kentucky or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Dayton KYAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Dayton KY hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Dayton home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are often more affordable than traditional options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Dayton KY ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Dayton KY area. Naturally location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Dayton KY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are reviewing have relationships with Dayton KY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Dayton health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Dayton KY residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Dayton KY area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
