Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

David KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in David KY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

David KY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through David KY clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Kentucky or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in David KYAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local David KY hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your David home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just as with any sonographer school you are considering, verify that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask David KY ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the David KY area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many David KY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are assessing have associations with David KY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the David medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their David KY residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the David KY area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.

    David, Kentucky

David is an unincorporated community and coal town in Floyd County, Kentucky, United States along County Route 404. Located in the Appalachian Mountains, it lies approximately 100 miles (160 km) southeast of Lexington. The town was named for David L. Francis, president of Princess Elkhorn Coal Company which originally built and owned the town.[1] It bears the postal ZIP code 41616. The U.S. Census of 2000 recorded a population of 435.[2]

Although it was formerly a company town, it was in many ways a model coal community with many amenities not typical of the region at the time including a swimming pool, central water and sewer, and cable TV service. The company also supported a children's choir which toured nationally. When Princess-Elkhorn sold the community in the late 1960s, many of these amenities fell into disrepair and the housing stock deteriorated from over 100 units to slightly more than 30. The town rallied around a hepatitis outbreak and ended up purchasing the entire town from the investor who owned it. The mechanism for this purchase was the creation of the David Community Development Corporation, which went on to secure funding for a new water and sewer system, a fire station, a new park and several dozen new homes.
