Sonogram Tech Work Description

Crestwood KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Crestwood KY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Crestwood KY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Crestwood KY hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Kentucky or whatever state you choose to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Crestwood KYAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Crestwood KY outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Crestwood home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are often less costly than traditional alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with every ultrasound tech program you are considering, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Crestwood KY ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Crestwood KY area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Crestwood KY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are evaluating have associations with Crestwood KY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Crestwood health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Crestwood KY home. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Crestwood KY area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
