Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Coldiron KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Coldiron KY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Coldiron KY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with Coldiron KY hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Kentucky or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Coldiron KYAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Coldiron KY outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Coldiron home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less costly than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are considering, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Coldiron KY ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Coldiron KY area. Naturally location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Coldiron KY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are reviewing have relationships with Coldiron KY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Coldiron healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Coldiron KY residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Coldiron KY area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

    Kentucky Route 72

Kentucky Route 72 is a 16.932-mile (27.249 km) state highway in Kentucky that is separated into two segments. The western segments runs from U.S. Route 119 just north of Blackmont to Rockhouse Branch Road just southeast of Alva via Blackmont, Pathfork, and Alva. The eastern segment runs from a dead end west of Pansy to Kentucky Route 413 at Baxter via Mary Alice and Harlan. It appears that the two segments were originally planned to connect, as the segments are separated by only a few miles.
