Sonographer Work Summary

Centertown KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Centertown KY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job tasks of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Centertown KY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Centertown KY hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Kentucky or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Centertown KYAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Centertown KY outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Centertown home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, verify that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Centertown KY ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Centertown KY area. Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Centertown KY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician colleges you are interested in have associations with Centertown KY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Centertown healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Centertown KY home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Centertown KY area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
