They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in California KY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure

Sonographers must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

California KY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with California KY hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Kentucky or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in California KYAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local California KY outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your California home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less costly than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with every sonographer school you are reviewing, check that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask California KY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the California KY area. Clearly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many California KY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are interested in have associations with California KY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the California medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their California KY residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the California KY area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
