To begin with, you must find the ideal program that will provide the proper education to become a qualified professional. And given that a number of states do mandate that ultrasound techs be either licensed or certified, depending on where you will practice you may also need to be prepared to pass a certification or licensing exam. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each school so that you can assess and compare your alternatives. But exactly where does one start? A number of potential students will begin by searching for schools that are within commuting distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Naturally location and cost need to be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are additional significant factors as well. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they offer internships. These and additional qualifiers will be covered more in depth later in this article. Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Bedford KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Bedford KY hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work functions of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Bedford KY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Bedford KY hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Kentucky or whatever state you choose to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Bedford KYAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Bedford KY outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Bedford home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less expensive than on campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonography college you are reviewing, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Bedford KY ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Bedford KY area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Bedford KY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have partnerships with Bedford KY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Bedford healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Bedford KY home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Bedford KY area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
