They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Beaver Dam KY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job duties of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them

  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Beaver Dam KY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Beaver Dam KY hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Kentucky or whatever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Beaver Dam KYAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Beaver Dam KY outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Beaver Dam home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Beaver Dam KY ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Beaver Dam KY area. Certainly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Beaver Dam KY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Beaver Dam KY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Beaver Dam medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Beaver Dam KY residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Beaver Dam KY area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
