First, you have to find the right program that will furnish the appropriate instruction to become a qualified professional. So it’s very important that you research each program in order to evaluate and compare your alternatives. But exactly where does one start? A number of potential students will begin by looking for schools that are within commuting distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Naturally location and cost need to be considered when making a decision, but there are additional significant factors as well. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they provide internships. These and other qualifiers will be covered more in depth later in this post. Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Barlow KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Barlow KY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Barlow KY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Barlow KY hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Kentucky or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Barlow KYAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Barlow KY outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Barlow home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are often less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are looking at, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Barlow KY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Barlow KY area. Certainly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Barlow KY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are assessing have associations with Barlow KY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Barlow health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Barlow KY home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Barlow KY area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
