Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Barbourville KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Barbourville KY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Barbourville KY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Barbourville KY clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Kentucky or whatever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Barbourville KYAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Barbourville KY hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Barbourville home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But just as with any sonography school you are reviewing, check that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Barbourville KY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Barbourville KY area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Barbourville KY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are reviewing have associations with Barbourville KY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Barbourville medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Barbourville KY residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Barbourville KY area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
