Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to ask Westmoreland KS ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Westmoreland KS area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Westmoreland KS health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are evaluating have associations with Westmoreland KS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Westmoreland medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Westmoreland KS home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Westmoreland KS area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
