Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Wellsville KS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Wellsville KS clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Kansas or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Wellsville KSAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Wellsville KS outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Wellsville home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Wellsville KS ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Wellsville KS area. Of course location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Wellsville KS employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Wellsville KS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Wellsville healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Wellsville KS home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Wellsville KS area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
