Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Virgil KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Virgil KS clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Virgil KS ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools set up with Virgil KS hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Kansas or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Virgil KS outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Virgil home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less costly than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are considering, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Virgil KS ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Virgil KS area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Virgil KS employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have associations with Virgil KS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Virgil healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Virgil KS residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Virgil KS area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
