So it’s very important that you research each school in order to assess and compare your choices. But just where does one begin? Many individuals will begin by looking for colleges that are within driving distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Of course cost and location must be considered when making a decision, but there are other critical factors as well. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they provide internship programs. These and other qualifiers will be discussed more in detail later in this post. Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Tonganoxie KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Tonganoxie KS hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work functions of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Tonganoxie KS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Tonganoxie KS hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Kansas or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Tonganoxie KSAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Tonganoxie KS hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Tonganoxie home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are looking at, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Tonganoxie KS ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Tonganoxie KS area. Naturally location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Tonganoxie KS health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have associations with Tonganoxie KS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Tonganoxie healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Tonganoxie KS residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Tonganoxie KS area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
