Sonogram Tech Work Description

Simpson KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Simpson KS hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Simpson KS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Simpson KS clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Kansas or whichever state you decide to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Simpson KSAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Simpson KS hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Simpson home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less costly than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are considering, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Simpson KS ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Simpson KS area. Naturally location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Simpson KS health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have associations with Simpson KS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Simpson healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Simpson KS home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Simpson KS area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
