Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Silver Lake KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Silver Lake KS hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Silver Lake KS ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Silver Lake KS hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Kansas or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Silver Lake KSAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Silver Lake KS outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Silver Lake home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less expensive than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are considering, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Silver Lake KS ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Silver Lake KS area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Silver Lake KS health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with Silver Lake KS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Silver Lake medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Silver Lake KS home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Silver Lake KS area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
