Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Satanta KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Satanta KS hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Satanta KS ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools organize with Satanta KS hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Kansas or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Sonographer Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Satanta KSAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Satanta KS outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Satanta home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are considering, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Satanta KS ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Satanta KS area. Naturally location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Satanta KS employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Satanta KS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Satanta health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Satanta KS residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Satanta KS area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
