Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Richfield KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Richfield KS hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Richfield KS ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up with Richfield KS clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Kansas or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Richfield KSAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Richfield KS outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Richfield home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are often less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech program you are looking at, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Richfield KS ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Richfield KS area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Richfield KS employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are interested in have associations with Richfield KS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Richfield medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Richfield KS residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Richfield KS area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
