Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Raymond KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Raymond KS clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job functions of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Raymond KS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools set up with Raymond KS hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Kansas or whichever state you choose to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Raymond KSAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Raymond KS hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Raymond home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonography school you are looking at, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Raymond KS ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Raymond KS area. Of course location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Raymond KS health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are interested in have associations with Raymond KS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Raymond healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Raymond KS residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Raymond KS area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Raymond, Kansas

Raymond is a city in Rice County, Kansas, United States. It is named after Emmons Raymond, former Director of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.[6][7] As of the 2010 census, the city population was 79.[8]

For millennia, the land now known as Kansas was inhabited by Native Americans. In 1803, most of modern Kansas was secured by the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase. In 1854, the Kansas Territory was organized, then in 1861 Kansas became the 34th U.S. state. In 1867, Rice County was founded.

Raymond was founded in 1871, making it the oldest town in Rice County.[6] The first post office in Raymond was established in 1872.[9] At one point in its history Raymond was known as a wild "cowtown" and was a stop on the Santa Fe Railroad, but the town has been in decline since the 1950s.
