Many students will begin by looking for colleges that are within driving distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost should be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are other important factors as well. Sonographer Work Summary

Quenemo KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Quenemo KS hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work duties of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Quenemo KS ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools organize through Quenemo KS clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Kansas or whichever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Quenemo KSAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Quenemo KS outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Quenemo home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with any sonographer school you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Quenemo KS ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Quenemo KS area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Quenemo KS employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have relationships with Quenemo KS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Quenemo health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Quenemo KS home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Quenemo KS area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
