Otis KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Otis KS hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job duties of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Otis KS ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Otis KS clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Kansas or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Otis KSAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Otis KS hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Otis home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are often less costly than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But just as with every sonography program you are considering, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Otis KS ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Otis KS area. Obviously location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Otis KS health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are assessing have associations with Otis KS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Otis medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within driving distance of their Otis KS home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Otis KS area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
