Osage City KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Osage City KS clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job functions of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable

  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Kansas or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Osage City KS area. Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Osage City KS employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are reviewing have associations with Osage City KS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Osage City KS residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Osage City KS area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
