Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Neal KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Neal KS clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work functions of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Neal KS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor through Neal KS clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Kansas or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Neal KSAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Neal KS outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Neal home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are often more affordable than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with any sonography college you are looking at, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

What to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Neal KS ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Neal KS area. Certainly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Neal KS employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with Neal KS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Neal health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Neal KS home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Neal KS area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
