Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Mulberry KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Mulberry KS clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work duties of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Mulberry KS ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools set up with Mulberry KS hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Kansas or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Mulberry KSAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Mulberry KS hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Mulberry home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are many times more affordable than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just as with every sonographer school you are reviewing, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Mulberry KS ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Mulberry KS area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Mulberry KS employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have associations with Mulberry KS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Mulberry medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Mulberry KS home. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Mulberry KS area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
