Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Linn KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Linn KS clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Linn KS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up with Linn KS clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Kansas or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Linn KSAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Linn KS outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Linn home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than traditional options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonography school you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Linn KS ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Linn KS area. Of course location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Linn KS employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are reviewing have associations with Linn KS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Linn healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Linn KS home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Linn KS area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
