Lenora KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Lenora KS hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job functions of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Lenora KS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor with Lenora KS hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Kansas or whatever state you decide to work in.

Sonographer Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Lenora KSAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Lenora KS hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Lenora home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less costly than on-campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonography school you are looking at, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Lenora KS ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Lenora KS area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Lenora KS health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have relationships with Lenora KS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Lenora healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Lenora KS residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Lenora KS area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
