Sonographer Job Summary

Kensington KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Kensington KS hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Kensington KS ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Kensington KS clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Kansas or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Kensington KSAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Kensington KS hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Kensington home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less costly than on-campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But just as with any sonography college you are considering, verify that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Kensington KS ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Kensington KS area. Clearly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Kensington KS health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are assessing have partnerships with Kensington KS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Kensington healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Kensington KS home. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Kensington KS area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
