Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Jennings KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Jennings KS clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work functions of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Jennings KS ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools organize with Jennings KS clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Kansas or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Jennings KSAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Jennings KS hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Jennings home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less costly than traditional alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just as with every sonography school you are considering, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Jennings KS ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Jennings KS area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Jennings KS health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Jennings KS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Jennings medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Jennings KS residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Jennings KS area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
