Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Hoxie KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Hoxie KS clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job duties of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Hoxie KS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Hoxie KS clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Kansas or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Hoxie KSAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Hoxie KS outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Hoxie home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times more affordable than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But just as with every sonographer program you are considering, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Hoxie KS ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Hoxie KS area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Hoxie KS employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Hoxie KS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Hoxie medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Hoxie KS residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Hoxie KS area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Hoxie, Kansas

Hoxie was laid out in early 1886. The town founders then soon convinced the residents of Kenneth, a community three miles to the north and the current county seat, to move south (including their buildings) at their expense to the new site of Hoxie. The residents of Kenneth knew the coming rail line would pass through Hoxie and not their town as they had hoped, so the offer was promising. The towns agreed to consolidate and carry out that plan, making Hoxie the new county seat.[8] It was named for H. M. Hoxie, a railroad official.[9][10] The railroad (which became part of the Union Pacific Railroad) arrived in 1888.[11]
