They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Herndon KS clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Herndon KS ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Herndon KS clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Kansas or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Herndon KSAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Herndon KS hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Herndon home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are considering, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Herndon KS ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Herndon KS area. Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Herndon KS health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician schools you are assessing have relationships with Herndon KS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Herndon healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within driving distance of their Herndon KS residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Herndon KS area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
